This is where it all begins...

Ed Camp

I learned so much today!! First of all, I appreciate the EdCamp as we were able to work collaboratively with the other cohort. While both of us are doing the PDP program, we didn’t have a lot of opportunities to work with one another. I think it’s a valuable experience to get to know more people who will eventually become our future colleagues.

At the very beginning, I was interested in the topic of the educational games. I think it’s very interesting that there were so many topics on the board, and how many of them are somehow related to one another. Unfortunately, the person who wanted to talk about educational games decided to join other group instead, so I ended up joining the nature classroom workshop. I learned so much about nature, plants, and fungi.

We talked about school gardens, wild plants, indigenous plants, and First Nations’ connection to land and nature, and most importantly, how we can cooperate with nature in the classroom! We discussed different non-profit organizations in Victoria. One of these is called “Vancouver Mycological Society” and they have great resources about mushrooms! (Yummm!) 🤤

Special thanks to Nisa and Elizabeth who lead the discussion smoothly!

Image Editing

What is it like really?

“Image editing refers to modifying or improving digital or traditional photographic images using different techniques, tools or software” (Techopedia)

Image editing… What is the first thing in your mind?

For many people, it’s probably the Adobe Photoshop program!

Adobe Photoshop is a great tool! But it can be too complex for some people… And not all schools will have the Adobe programs available for students to use and explore.

Why don’t we use something more familiar to the students!?

How To Get Microsoft PowerPoint For Free

Did you know that PowerPoint can be used for image editing as well!?

Mind-blowing!! 🤯

Today’s class was super interesting!! Of course, before today, I had no idea I could use PowerPoint to edit images. What a fun experience!!

Here are some examples of the pictures our class created within the 10 minutes! Please enjoy!

Internet Safety!?

Do we know how to be safe online?

First of all, let’s quickly check our digital footprints by searching our names on Google and see if there are any unexpected results showing up.

Are we happy with the results?
Maybe or maybe not!?

Now what?

It is time to learn about internet safety!!

Today, Jesse Miller from Mediated Reality talked about social media, as well as how to be safe online. I personally think that this is such an important topic because nowadays almost all of the students have a cellphone, and they definitely go on many different social media platforms. This is very relatable to my learning journey because I will be working in a Middle School for my first practicum, and middle schoolers are still learning and trying to experience different things online via social media platforms such as

I wanted to add Facebook as well, but then realized that students in middle school think that Facebook is for old(er) people (Ouch!)

It is sooo important to make sure that our students can be safe online!!

BUT HOW DO WE TEACH THAT??

  • Discuss terms and conditions even though we all know that nobody reads them…
  • Teach them about digital footprints!! And yes, Snapchat does save your photos somewhere…
  • Talk about identity theft and maybe that example of an online dating site…
  • Brainstorm ideas and activities for safer internet use. Yes, students can come up with rules that they all agree with
  • Have a debate about cell phones used in the classrooms

Lastly, I want to finish up this block post with a TedTalk from Jesse, which I found very helpful. I hope you enjoy this video as much as I do!
